KimMarie McGoldrick

Professor of Economics
University of Richmond

Dr. KimMarie McGoldrick is Professor of Economics in the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond where she has taught for 15 years. Dr. McGoldrick has received each of the awards that the School conveys: the Outstanding Teacher, Scholarly Activity, and Service awards. In 2006 she received the University’s highest honor in being named Distinguished Educator. Her recognition extends well beyond the university walls as a professional colleague described Dr. McGoldrick as “a leader in economic education, clearly among the very best of her generation.”

A common theme in Dr. McGoldrick’s courses is the focus on conducting economic analysis through research and community service. She developed the department’s senior Capstone Experience course in which students are mentored through the process of conducting original research. Her Women and Gender Issues in Economics course incorporates a service-learning project which enhances student learning by connecting classroom content to the real world in a way that improves the lives of those being served.

Her most recent research focuses on developing, assessing, and distributing best practices in economic education spanning a wide range of education topics including service-learning, undergraduate research, and cooperative learning. Her current research (supported by a grant from the Teagle Foundation) evaluates the purpose and practice of economic education as related to liberal education goals. Her work appears in leading education journals, including the Journal of Economic Education.

Dr. McGoldrick has co-organized 11 economics education workshops since 1996. Her most recent efforts contribute to the NSF-funded Teaching Innovations Program which promotes the scholarship of teaching and learning in addition to traditional workshop activities. In recognition of her research and service, she was invited to serve on the American Economic Association’s (AEA) Committee on Economic Education. Dr. McGoldrick has also served on the AEA’s Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession and as Co-PI on an NSF ADVANCE grant supporting women’s advancement in the field. As part of this project, she developed and facilitated five mentoring workshops targeted at helping women at institutions with equal emphasis on teaching and research achieve tenure.

Dr. McGoldrick earned her B.S. in accounting from SUNY Oswego and her M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from SUNY Binghamton. She gratefully acknowledges the support of her long-time partner CJ in all her endeavors. She is an avid cyclist and enjoys challenging (mountainous) century (100 mile) bicycle rides. In 2007, she spent the summer cycling across the United States.
